HOW I FIGURED OUT MY SHAMELESS PATH

(Part 1)

“I've been staring at the edge of the water, long as I can remember, never really knowing why. I wish I could be the perfect daughter but I come back to the water, no matter how hard I try” - Moana (Disney).

For many of us, the term “INDIVIDUALITY” has lost its purpose and meaning hence we constantly battle the urge to come out of our shells and metamorphose into the beautiful butterflies we are destined to become.

As a young girl who was brought up in a society that constantly tries to imbibe its norms, rules and beliefs in you right from your toddler days I have experienced this deprivation of knowledge of oneself first hand. Another young woman who has experienced this that we should all know is the beautiful Moana. For those of us who have no idea who Moana is or haven’t had time to see the movie, it’s basically a movie about a young girl who was brought up on an island and from a young age was forbidden from going close to the sea or even looking at it for too long but unfortunately for her parents and the other islanders, their next leader found herself falling more in love with the water and the untold beauty that lay ahead of it day after day.

Every turn I take, every trail I track, every path I make, every road leads back to the place I know where I cannot go; Where I long to be”- Moana (Disney).

Long story short, Moana eventually did what any brave disney teenager would, she stole a boat, went to sea, found a man and it all went downhill from there lol.

You may be wondering where I’m going with this or why I’m trying to relate our cruel reality to the story of another stubborn, entitled and overly dramatic disney princess that sings unnecessarily; Well brace yourself because here it comes;

… WE ALL HAVE OUR “OCEAN”. EACH AND EVERY ONE OF US HAS THAT THING, THAT ONE THING THAT DRIVES US AND SCARES US AT THE SAME TIME, THAT ONE THING THAT FUELS OUR PASSION AND ALSO MAKES US WEAK WHEN WE IMAGINE HOW IMPOSSIBLE TO ACHIEVE IT APPEARS TO BE …

“See the line where the sky meets the sea? It calls me and no one knows how far it goes. If the wind in my sail on the sea stays behind me, one day I'll know!! If I go there's just no telling how far I'll go”- Moana (Disney).

… to be continued
